A common question that I get asked a lot is why do nails stain? Or Why do nails turn yellow after wearing polish for a long time, or after wearing dark colors?
The most likely reason your nails would stain would be due to dark colored polishes that contain darker pigments. They can stain nails due to a chemical reaction between the colorant and the chemistry of your nail plate. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, darker colored polish, in various tints of blue, brown, burgundy, black can cause this reaction to take place within days to weeks while wearing the nail color. Certain cleaning products containing chemicals or harsh ingredients can also cause this reaction. If you are dehydrated or your nails are soft or brittle, typically they will pull any moisture (or color pigments) that they can from the polish. Either way, this is neither bad nor harmful for your nails because it is superficial.
If you use a base coat like our nail perfector before applying polish, this will help create not only a smooth surface for the polish to adhere to, but also it acts like a barrier, protecting your nail. If your nails do happen to stain, not to worry, you can scrub with some toothpaste, or baking soda. This is a great at home natural remedy to brighten your nails anytime! I also like the dry manicure process, this means no soaking your nails in water before applying polish. Although it softens cuticles, and can feel good, it is not good for your nails due to the expansion (think of a sponge expanding in water) and then drying out, which means pulling anything out of your polish leaving it susceptible to chipping, staining etc.
